Nigeria’s only ATP player, Christopher Bulus representing Ogun State, has secured his first ever gold medal at the National Sports Festival, Nigeria Tennis Live reports.

The US-based Davis Cup star who was odds-on favourite to win the competition, was outstanding all week before securing the gold medal against his opponent from Bayelsa State who retired after the second set.

Bulus took a sensational 5-0 lead before relinquishing a game to his counterpart from Bayelsa, and after serving for the set, he returned with the same firepower in the second set and took a 2-0 lead. His opponent who could not continue with the match consequently retired in the second set to a loud cheer by the crowd who seemed to be enjoying themselves.

The man nicknamed Aremu chanted a very loud Baisii to which the audience responded Baawa – which literally translates to ‘How are you?’ and ‘I’m doing good’.

In the Women’s Singles final, Delta State’s Oyinlomo Quadre was clinical in her match against Ohunene Yakubu from Ogun State, as she left no stone unturned.

Quadre, who will be starting her fourth year in US College at the Oklahoma University this summer, won emphatically against Nigeria’s highest ranked female junior player on the ITF rankings, and ended the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

The win for Delta State means that Ogun State ended the Singles events with one gold and one silver medal, the most medals won by any State in tennis so far.

Other events are still continuing at the National Sports Festival, with other States still standing the chance of winning medals while those who have won would have the opportunity of increasing their tally.

Nigeria Tennis Live will keep our readers updated on the developments around the Festival as it wraps up on Wednesday, 28 May, 2025.
