    Azimuth Junior Tennis: Michael, Godwin, Atilola Record Big Wins

    Joel Michael, Success Godwin and Mofifunoluwa Atilola were among the youngsters who recorded big wins during the day two of the ongoing Azimuth Shipping Lines Junior Tennis Championship holding inside the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

    The three players are competing for honors in the Boys and Girls U-14 categories in what is one of the most competitive age-grade competitions in Nigeria.

    Michael, the tournament’s number two seed, played two matches, and won both games without any form of pressure. The Lagos State youngster defeated Mohammadou Abdullahi 4-1, 4-1 in the opening game, before thrashing Feranmi Babawale 4-0, 4-0 to reach the quarterfinal.

    Godwin Akinfunmiloye recorded one of the biggest wins on the day, though, as he defeated the Boys’ U-14 top seed, Yakubu Adeiza in two straight sets of 4-1, 4-1 before dispatching his brother Goodluck, 4-0, 4-0.

    One of the standout players from last year, Samuel Ndem, maintained his outstanding performance in Lagos, as he defeated Hussaini Abdullahi and Emmanuel Shobowale 4-1, 4-1 and 4-1, 4-0 respectively.

    Ndem, an U-12 finalist from last year’s edition, now looks set to secure his first ever semifinal berth in the U-14 category when he takes on Daniel Johnson, another outstanding player.

    In the girls’ event, number one seed, Atilola who got a bye in the first round of the event, defeated Omoyinka Ayinla 4-1, 4-0 to reach the quarterfinal while Godwin, the number two seed, rolled 4-0, 4-2 over Sophiat Raheem in the second round.

    Abuja-based Salvation Alex had to dig deep to defeat emerging tennis star, Naomi Ogunyemi from Australia, in a final set encounter which ended 3-5, 4-0, 10-7.

    On Wednesday, 15 January, the boys and girls’ U-16 matches will serve off inside the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, as the tournament nears the peak end.
