Nigerian tennis players are currently unhappy with the number of national tournaments available for them since the turn of the year.

Traditionally, for the past few years, there were five competitions that the players had been open to, even though this was already a reduction from the previous number of competitions they used to have.

The DavNotch, VEMP and CBN Open events often hold in the middle of the year while the Rainoil and the Dala Hard Court championships often round the year up.

However, in an unprecedented twist of fate, the Rainoil Open Championship did not hold in 2023 and the 2024 CBN Open, which traditionally would have held sometime in June, has not been held till date (August, 2024).

Despite these background details in mind, Nigeria Tennis Live has gathered that there may be a sigh of relief in the tournaments that are likely to be held before the end of the year.

Already, players are agitated and have been asking if the CBN Open, which is like Nigeria’s Grand Slam, will be holding this year, but this has not been confirmed by the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF).

However, Nigeria Tennis Live sources are mooting the possibility of the CBN Open holding this year as one of them said: “the chances of having the CBN Open is high because the junior CBN will be holding already”.

Another source who preferred anonymity noted that there are chances that the Rainoil Championship will stage a return this year after last year’s absence.

“Those tournaments are the ones that are likely to be held, I’m sure of that. But for Rainoil, I’ll have to confirm that to you next week,” our impeccable source offered.

As things stand, there are chances that players are still able to participate in three national tournaments before the year ends – the CBN Open, the Rainoil Championship and the Dala Hard Court tournament in Abuja, Lagos and Kano respectively.

Nigeria Tennis Live will give update our readers with all the latest information regarding these tournaments as they are available.
