Abubakar Yusuf, one of Nigeria’s top players, has revealed how participating at the African Games has really improved his game.

The Abuja-based tennis player was one of the players Nigeria took to play the recently-concluded event in Ghana, where – despite a second round loss to Benjamin Lock, the eventual finalist – he proved that he was not a mere pushover.

Ahead of the VEMP Open National Tennis Championship in Abuja, the teenage player told Nigeria Tennis Live what his chances are at the tournament.

He noted that he is determined to be victorious at the ongoing competition despite the calibre of players who will be participating.

“The level this year is actually not very high like that of last year, because this year almost all the big players are not around, but my chance of winning is like 80%,” Abubakar told Nigeria Tennis Live correspondent.

He then explained how playing at the African Games has impacted his game while also giving his firm verdict on how his tournament would go.

“Actually it’s going to help me a lot because I played with ATP players so its just for me to make up my mind, apply the things I learnt and give it my best shot.

“My target is to win not to lose even if its in the finals,” the spirited Mambilla Barracks Tennis Club player added.

Nigeria Tennis Live will keep tabs on all the activities of the Nigerian players ahead of the first national tournament of the year.
