Two players from the prestigious Aurum Tennis Academy in Abuja will be playing the Boys’ Singles Final at the J30 Abuja event on Sunday.

Prosper Ikenna Okonkwo will be playing against Seun Ogunsakin, both of whom are in the Academy, a situation which is unprecedented in the competition’s history.

Ogunsakin, currently ranked 760 in the world, won his semifinal game against Ganiyu Mubarak, also of the Aurum Tennis Academy, to reach his second consecutive final at the J30 event in Abuja having won the first leg of the event.

He will take on Okonkwo, his colleague at the Aurum Academy, and spectators will be looking forward to the match up between both players who are arguably Nigeria’s best U-16 players.

Jan-Richfield Dongo, the General Manager of Aurum Academy, was over the moon with the pairing which he says is really huge.

“Having two players in the finals is huge for us already. No matter who wins tomorrow, we are already a winner,” the excited GM said in a chat with Nigeria Tennis Live.

“I’m really happy about this development and it’s the first time we are having this in our Academy. We just want to enjoy the game tomorrow,” he added.

No matter where this match swings, Okonkwo will reach his highest junior ITF ranking ever, as he is currently ranked 958 in the world and his highest ranking ever is 946 which he attained in January, 2024.

The Girls’ Singles final is also expected to bring the centre court alive as the entertaining pair of Ohunene Yakubu and Khadijat Mohammed will be trading serves in one of the tournament’s most anticipated matches.

Yakubu had the last laugh in their most recent meeting which dragged into a final set encounter, but Mohammed, who fought her way into the final, will be hoping to avenge her loss by coming out tops in this match up.

The final of the second leg of the J30 Abuja event is scheduled to serve off by 9am on Sunday, February, 2024 inside the tennis section of the National Stadium, Abuja.
