Seyi Ogunsakin and Chukwudubem Amasiani were at their outstanding best in Nigeria’s first match at the ongoing U-12 African Junior Championships in Morocco.

Nigeria is in Group II of the competition alongside Zimbabwe, Morocco, Namibia, Equatorial Guinea and Libya, and played the first of the round robin games on Monday, 2 October, 2023.

Ogunsakin, playing as the number two player from Nigeria, defeated Zimbabwe in two straight sets of 6-0, 6-1 to set the tone for the whitewash against the Zimbabweans.

In the second rubber, Amasiani, the Nigerian number one, dusted his opponent with a resounding 6-1, 6-1 victory before Ogunsakin partnered with Joel Michael to confirm Nigeria’s 3-0 in with a 6-0, 6-2 doubles defeat of Zimbabwe.

Nigeria’s next test will be against hosts Morocco, who will be hoping to go one past Nigeria with their home support and their hosting privileges.

But the boys from Nigeria, who were very ruthless in their qualification series, will be up to the task when both countries square up by 1:30pm (Moroccan Time) on Tuesday, 3 October, 2023.

Nigerians will be drumming all the support for the youngsters whom many believe can return home with the winners’ medal.
