Kafayat Omisore and Alex Adewale have won the inaugural VEMP Open Championship in Lagos organized for wheelchair tennis players in Nigeria, our correspondent can confirm.

The tournament which was held inside the tennis section of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, featured top wheelchair tennis players across the country, who were extremely excited about the tournament, and who also gave a good account of themselves.

Nigeria Tennis Live recalls that for almost a decade now, Adewale has been unbeatable on the Nigerian scene and his dominance is evident in the results of his matches in all competitions across the country.

More frequently than not, he has had to battle Wasiu Yusuf for trophies, and at the first ever VEMP Open competition in Lagos, it was no different even as wheelchair tennis players were beaming with smiles for having another tournament to compete in yet again.

Adewale, a former US Open entrant, won the tournament by beating Yusuf in two clear sets of 6-3, 6-1 to take home the trophy and the prize money for the winner. He is yet to drop a set in any of the tournaments he has played so far.

In the Women’s Singles, Omisore, another dominant force in national wheelchair tennis, saw off compatriot, Foluke Shodeinde to continue with her strong statement on the Nigerian scene of the championship.

Information gathered by Nigeria Tennis Live has it that even though Omisore defeated Shodeinde to emerge winner of the inaugural event, the latter was a thorn in the flesh of other players, as she created a thought-provoking upset against Chituru Nwaozuzu, the tournament’s number one seed.

But her 1-6, 1-6 loss to eventual winner and number two seed, Omisore, will seem like a bad PR for the good job she did against the Nigerian number one female wheelchair tennis star.

Nigeria Tennis Live gathered that the Men and Women’s Singles winners will be smiling to the bank with N100,000 cash prize which the sponsors earmarked for winners of the competition.
