Nigerian Tennis Live can exclusively report that Team Nigeria to the forthcoming Davis Cup will soon go into a close camping to prepare for the team tournament.

Information made available to our correspondent by Rotimi Akinloye, the head of the tennis federation’s technical department, has it that the players – some of whom are presently in good shape – will be closely monitored ahead of the tournament, to determine their fitness and readiness for the competition.

He said: “The Nigerian team will go into close camping in the first week of June. Most of them are in form and are in good shape ahead of the competition.

Abdulmumuni Babalola and Sylvester Emmanuel in action for Nigeria at the last Davis Cup tournament in Egypt.

“The players have been informed already but the list is yet to be concluded on by the tennis federation, although the players are in top gear ahead of the team tournament.

“All things being equal, though, the list should be out at the end of this week and the names of the players will be made public.”

Injuries hampered the team’s performance at the last competition, but Nigerian players still gave a good account of themselves with Sylvester Emmanuel particularly defeating Takanyi Garanganga, a top 600 player in the world.

The number target of the team will now be to go one better than last year’s performance and ratings after the championship.
