Two siblings, Neku and Iye Onoja, have qualified for the Girls 12 finals at the NNPC Junior Tennis Championship currently taking place at the Murtala Square, Kaduna – a feat reminiscent of the famous sisters-act encounters by the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, in Grand Slam and WTA Championship events.
Neku, 11 and Iye, 9 also exhibit the traits of the American tennis legends with the younger Iye being the more aggressive and more adventurous on court.
Other finalists include Usman Kushima from Ogun who takes on Musa Yahaya from Kano in the Boys 12 finals as well as Abdullahi Ajanaku and Gabriel Friday both from Lagos who meet in the Boys 10 finals.
All final matches are scheduled for Saturday.
Young sensations, Angel McCleod and Marylove Edwards are also on course for another showdown in the Girls 14 singles event.
McCleod will meet Kasara Adegboyega from Oyo while Edwards will take on Favour Moses from Kaduna in their respective semifinal matches.
The Boys 16 semifinals will feature Chris Itodo from Kaduna against Olumide Ayoola from Lagos and a mouth-watering all-Lagos clash between Chris Bulus and David Amusu.
Meanwhile, Secretary of the Kaduna State Tennis Association, Garba Shehu has hailed the consistency of the International Tennis Academy, ITA with its developmental programmes over the years.
Shehu stated as well that the Tennis Association is looking forward to having more tournaments from the ITA, especially at a time when it is going through crisis financially.
According to him, “we are really grateful to the ITA, which has through its consistent partnership, brought our sports development up to speed in this state, especially during this period when we are in dire need of sponsorship.
“Not just tennis, but all other sports are in need of sponsorship and we hope that things will work out fine in due time.”
The weeklong tournament which is part of the ITA Junior Tennis Circuit ends on Saturday.
