Nigeria’s Lucky Danjuma is now among the top 500-ranked junior players on the Junior ITF rankings after his impeccable performance in Ghana.

The Nigerian teenager won two Junior ITF titles in quick succession, and broke into the top 500 in the world, 27th in Africa and 4th in Nigeria.

Danjuma had defeated Australia’s Aadithya Pai in two straight sets of 7-5, 6-4 when the pair squared up against each other in the final of the first leg of the J30 Accra event in Ghana but was made to fight all the way during the final of the second leg.

The Australian who seemed to have discovered the best way to get the better of the talented Nigerian tennis player, took the first set 6-3 and looked really ready to get his revenge against Danjuma but the Abuja-based player had other plans.

Danjuma fought back fiercely in the two ensuing sets, racing to a 5-0 lead in the second set before closing out the set at 6-1.

Buoyed by his new spirited performance and the crowd cheering him on, it did not take long before the Nigerian player won the third and final set with a 6-4 win.

Thus, the 18-year-old won his first ever Junior ITF titles in quick succession, and was the only Nigerian who rose in the recently-released rankings by the ITF.

He is currently ranked 433 in the world, a position which could change even further, should be participate in more ITF events in the coming weeks.
