Ashim Ghazal, the top U-12 player at the ongoing Azimuth Shipping Lines Junior Tennis Championship in Lagos is in blistering form.

The Ibadan, Oyo-based tennis youngster who has been on the rise for a while now, and was a revelation at the last event, won all of his matches on day one of the competition in Lagos.

Ghazal, known for his movements on the court and relentlessness, lived up to his billing as the tournament’s number one seed, dispatching his opponents without fear.

He has now reached the quarterfinal of the competition, and looks unstoppable with the form he currently is in.

The U-12 event kickstarting what will be a flurry of matches at the ongoing competition in Lagos, as the girls’ event also served off on Monday, 13 January.

Nigeria Tennis Live reports that unlike the boys’ event which had a full draw of 32, the girls’ event had byes for some of the players making some of them play their first matches in the second round.

For the next round of matches, the boys and girls U-14 players will take to the court to slug it out on Tuesday, 14 January, 2025.

The Azimuth Shipping Lines Junior Tennis Championship which is in its seventh season, gives educational grants to winners and runners-up as part of developmental programmes for grassroots tennis in Nigeria.
