Ohunene Yakubu has won the Girls’ Singles title at the first leg of the inaugural J30 Lagos tournament held inside the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja.

The Tunisia-based teenager edged out top seed Success Ogunjobi, in two sets that ended 6-3, 6-3 to win her first ever clay court title and her third overall title for the year.

Yakubu had a slow start to the game, going down 0-2 before picking up and driving her way into the game at 2-2.

Ogunjobi held serve to take a 3-2 lead but that was as far as she could go as her opponent took the first set 6-3.

The second set started a bit fiercer than the first but Yakubu did not let her guard down, taking the second set with the same score as the first.

The Boys’ Singles final was a beautiful exchange between Benjamin James of Nigeria and Spain’s Javier Jimenez, two of the competition’s best players as they went neck-to-neck in the opening games.

Both players broke each other’s serves in the opening stage of the set and it continued that way until the Spaniard went ahead with some deft backhand strokes to take the first set 6-3.

In the ensuing second set, James, buoyed by the home support, stepped up his game and took a 4-3 lead, but it was his opponent who was more fired up in the closing stages of the second set to take a 5-4 lead.

On his serve, he was made to wait for the win despite having match points. When he hit one final serve, it was too little, too late for James to return, handing the teenager his first ever Junior ITF title.
